Sean Bean to Star in Detective Trilogy

If you scroll down the sidebar you'll see that I reported on the rumor of Sean Bean starring in this series of films a while ago.

Thanks to my friend The Hollywood Spy I now know that Dateline London has reported that Sean will indeed star in a film trilogy "Devil's Peak" as Cape Town detective Benny Griessel. Dateline describes Griessel as a "recovering alcoholic with family issues and other demons who's very good at catching murderers." The films are based on the novels by Deon Meyer. The films will start shooting in September in South Africa.

Kicking off the big day will be a celebrity run with everyone invited from Wellington’s mayor, the actors from the Hobbit to a few politicians . The winner will be presented with medals by New Zealand Olympic Legend Sir John Walker .

Sean Bean in Negotiations to Star in Cape Town Detective Film "Thirteen Hours"

Sean Bean may play Cape Town fictional Detective Benny Griessel in a new film according to an article in Cape Argus.

The article describes Benny as “worn-out, alcoholic and brilliant Benny Griessel”.

According to the article Thirteen Hours author Deon Meyers tweeted that negotiations were in their final stages for Sean to star in the film and that filming would start in March in Cape Town, South Africa. The thriller has won several awards. You can read a review of the book at the link below:

Luke Evans Talks about The Hobbit On MTV News

In a new interview about The Immortals on MTV, Luke Evans talks about how he's doing in New Zealand filming The Hobbit:

"The thing is, I've done about 10 percent of what I'm going to be doing, shoot-wise, so I can't really say, but the cast are fantastic. We're so far away from home. We have a little family," he said. "Peter [Jackson] and the team create a very warm atmosphere on set and off set. We all socialize, it's really special. I just feel very lucky to be a part of it."

North & South and Spooks (MI-5) Win Top Spots in BBC America's Top British Drama's of All Time

North & South wins the #2 spot in BBC America Anglophenia Readers Poll of the 10 Best British TV Series of All Time.

I hope BBC America and PBS (US Public TV) will look at the results of this poll and will broadcast this wonderful series in the U.S. It aired only once in only select PBS stations back in 2005, I know because I was one of the lucky ones that saw it then. I don't recall that it ever aired on BBC America.

Also great news that Spooks or MI-5 in the U.S., won the #7 spot in the reader's poll. Another series that has never been allowed the time to find it's American audience on PBS or BBC America.

The time is now PBS and BBC America for US audiences to see these two great British programs.

Streaming British Television Online- Acorn TV

Looks like there's a new streaming TV service available for British Television lovers. According to Entertainment Weekly, ACORN TV will offer a full season of six different series with the first episode available for free. After that we'll have to pay for it, $24.99 a year to get access to all the episodes.

Is it worth it? Acorn TV is offering a free trail through August 31.

Right now it looks like they're offering old favorites like Brideshead Revisited and the Poirot series, but it may be worthwhile if they offer access to series that have not been available outside of the UK. I don't know if I want to pay to see shows I can get on US Public Television or BBCAmerica (when they do show something worthwhile). They do have a couple of shows listed under "Coming Soon" like Lost Empire and Garrow's Law that I haven't seen.

I don't know if it's worth subscribing to in the long run, but certainly worth checking out for all of us that love British Television.

"The Hobbit" Question of the Month: Sexy Dwarves or Bearded Dwarves?

Unless you've been under a rock lately you know that Peter Jackson and "The Hobbit" group have been very busy making casting announcements about the film. Because of the casting of several very attractive actors (talented actors all) for the Middle-earth dwarves (Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner, and others) there's quite an interesting discussion developing between Tolkien purists and fans of the actors in question, or just movie fans in general about whether the look of the Middle-earth dwarves should remain true to the book, or maybe changed to provide some eye candy for us ladies.

Caravaggio directed by Derek Jarman is #56 on the list and has been mentioned on this blog because it was Sean Bean's first film role. I wrote a review of the film a while back and you can find the review at the link below:

Dark Shadows Movie

I was excited to read about the "Dark Shadows" remake to be directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.

I'm about to age myself here, but when I was a pre-teen I used to rush home from school, plop myself on the floor in front of the TV, and watch my favorite soap opera "Dark Shadows" every day. I was not alone as thousands of pre-teen and teen girls fell madly in love with brooding (there's that word again!) lovesick vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid.

(Talk about older man - Mr. Frid is old enough to be my father! I'm glad to see that he's still with us and I really hope we'll see him at least doing a cameo in the film.)

Johnny Depp is a marvelous actor, and I believe he'll do justice to the role of brooding and conflicted vampire Barnabas. Depp has an otherworldly vibe as a person, and the good looks and mysterious presence to carry this off.
